My travel bucket list – 5 places I’d love to visit

It gets to a certain point in the year when the sun finally comes out that I start dreaming of being on a sunny beach somewhere with a cocktail in hand. Don’t get me wrong, I absolutely love a relaxing beach holiday, and anywhere Greek is on my radar every year. However, I have a list as long as my arm of places I would love to visit before my time is up, which are mostly touristy sightseeing holidays. I recently read a post from a fellow blogger where she listed her top 5 places she’d love to visit, and it got me thinking of some of the places I’d really like to see.

I thought I’d share them today in the hopes that writing them down would somehow manifest a trip into my life (we can all dream, right)? Some of these places appear on my 30 things to do before I turn 30 list, but I thought I’d include them in a travel specific list.

I have been very fortunate in my life that I have been able to travel a fair bit. We always had family holidays when I was young and we visited so many places like Turkey, Tunisia, Spanish islands and so many others including Greek islands. They were always a lovely mix of poolside chilling and day trips to see some of the country’s culture. In more recent years we’ve been to see the buried city of Pompeii and climbed Mount Vesuvius (read all about my experience here).

I have also done quite a bit of travelling myself and have had some incredible experiences, such as volunteering at a Turtle conservation project in Sri Lanka, seeing some of the sights and climbing Sigiriya. I also spent a week in one of Costa Rica’s national parks studying Howler Monkey behaviour whilst at university as well as seeing some of the other national parks and points of interest.

Onto places I’m still yet to visit, and I’ve managed to narrow down my top 5 places that I just have to see.

Athens

Now this first one is a bit of cheat because as I’m writing this post, I have exactly 3 days until I fly to Athens. We are going for 3 days and I couldn’t be more excited – it’s been on my bucket list for absolute years.

I used to be obsessed with a PC game when I was younger called Zeus – Mount of Olympus, and since then I’ve loved all things Ancient Greece. I love learning about the various Gods and being able to visit their temples will be an absolute dream come true.

Keukenhof, Holland

One place I’d really love to visit is the tulip gardens in Amsterdam. I have been to Amsterdam before however the time of year we went the gardens weren’t open (we also ran out of time anyway). Tulips are one of my favourite flowers and it would be so lovely to see the gardens where they bloom in their thousands and learn some of the history surrounding Holland and tulips.

Lapland

An absolute dream of mine is to see the Northern Lights. I’d really like to incorporate this into a trip to Santa’s Village in Lapland and experience the festive period there. I’ve watched some travel vlogs of Santa’s Village and it looks absolutely magical!

Machu Picchu, Peru

This place has fascinated me for a long time and I’d really like to visit one day. I can just imagine the feeling of accomplishment when you’ve climbed to the top and you can see this ancient city before you.

Mexico

This last one is a honeymoon destination for me (when the time eventually comes). I don’t know why but Mexico has been on my list of places to go for years. I’ll be honest I don’t really know too much about Mexico or anything to do there apart from lie on the beach with Tequila and some delicious Mexican food, so I still have a bit of research to do before I go.

And there you have it – my top 5 places I’d love to visit. Do you have a travel bucket list?

Until next time

  1. Awesome bucket list, Machu Picchu and Lapland are on mine as well. Mexico is amazing, when you go be sure to visit the Riviera Maya where all the temples are.

  2. Totally with you on Lapland. A friend visited last Christmas and it looked incredible. Mainly though, my travel goals are to see more of America and Canada as well as a trip to Japan.
    Great read, thanks for sharing.
