A weekend away in Cornwall with BlueChipHolidays

My boyfriend and I absolutely love Cornwall, and we’re always planning trips down there. We decided to have a trip there a couple of weekends ago. We had used Blue Chip Holidays on a previous trip, so we used them again to find the most amazing place to stay. We stayed in Stonerush Lakes, which are a set of lodges with hot tubs on the decking. There are all different views to chose from, but we chose lake view which had a gorgeous view out over the lake. Here’s what we got up to over the weekend:

Day 1

We travelled down to Cornwall from Somerset on the Friday, going shopping in Exeter on the way down to kill some time. As we couldn’t check in until 4, we weren’t in a hurry to get there so we thought it would be the perfect opportunity to have a mooch around the shops. After a very eventful journey of ending up in a village the car barely fit through (the sat nav didn’t recognise the address!) we ended up at Stonerush Valley. We were greeted by a lovely lady who gave us our information to get into our lodge and off we went. We had a little wander around the lakes and saw some of the wildlife that was there, making friends with a goose couple and a lonely heron. After unpacking we quickly opened a beverage and clambered into the hot tub to enjoy the gorgeous view of the lake.

Day 2

On Saturday we visited Lanhydrock house and gardens, which is a National Trust property. I had never been there before so it was really nice to look around the house and see what all the different rooms were used for. It was really cute to see all the staff in each room dressed up in costume dependant on the room they were based. It was a glorious day outside so we had a mini picnic in the grounds and did a big garden walk all round the house and fields, and it’s safe to say my legs ached! We then went back to the lodge, and after dinner we retreated to the hot tub to watch the sunset.

Day 3

Sunday we decided to visit Porfell Wildlife Sanctuary, which is one place I had never been before. After walking through the entrance, to be honest we thought ‘what the hell have we come to’. But after walking around for a bit and seeing some of the animals we quickly changed our minds. It was so lovely to see the old and ‘retired’ animals that had come to the sanctuary to live out their days, and some of their stories were heartwarming. We loved feeding the donkeys, deer and chickens which were running around our feet, and as it was lovely weather we had a picnic there before heading off to our next destination.

In the afternoon we ventured into St. Austell to have a game of football golf. This is something we always see when we go to Cornwall but never actually do, so we took the plunge! It was actually really fun, although it’s safe to say Aaron won. The site was massive and had 2 courses to chose from – a flatter course and one with more obstacles and bends. They also had a bar where you could get drinks, including alcoholic ones if you wanted to! It was such a great afternoon out, so definitely check it out if you’re after something a bit different to do.

Day 4

Monday soon came around, and it was time to leave. We had to be out of the lodge by 10am which was fine because we wanted to do stuff on the way back anyway. We ventured into Torquay on the way home and had a walk around the Living Coasts sealife centre. We really enjoyed this as you could get up close to the penguins and other birds. We watched the seals and stingrays being fed and listened to the talks which were really interesting. After this, we had a walk around the town and along the harbour, and ended up going on their big wheel. The views from this were amazing and you could see out for miles as it was a clear day. We then drove on home to Somerset.

We had a really nice time away, and we will definitely be going back to Stonerush Lakes. The lodges were beautiful and the hot tub was amazing with gorgeous views out over the lake. I didn’t manage to take any pictures of the lodge so I have gotten these from their site:

Until next time.

  4. I’ve been to Cornwall once on a surfing and activities holiday when I was at school and loved it but I’d love to go back as an adult. Although it takes around 7 hours to get there from where I am! This looks like such a lovely trip. What I wouldn’t give for a dip in a hot tub right now!
